Wheeling Central went for two and the win, but were denied by Bishop Donahue, as the Bishops ended a three-game losing streak to the Maroon Knights in a thrilling, come-from-behind 33-32 victory at Wheeling Island Stadium.
A turnover, deep in their own, end proved costly for the Maroon Knights with the score tied at 26.
Bishop Donahue junior quarterback Jesse Padlow connected with Chief Truex a few plays later for the go-ahead touchdown.
But Wheeling Central freshman quarterback Isaac Rine came right back and hooked up with classmate John Burkhalter for a touchdown to pull the Knights within one. Rine's two-point conversion pass was broken up in the end zone by the Bishops' Jared Yates, which touched off a huge celebration.
The victory moves the Bishops into playoff contention at 6-3. A victory over red-hot Tyler Consolidated (5-4) on Thursday night in Moundsville will punch their ticket. The Silver Knights will carry a five-game winning streak into the game.
Wheeling Central, now 5-4, will have to win next Friday night at Class AAA Spring Mills (1-7) to have any shot at a post-season berth.
Central senior running back C.J. Burch ran 23 times for 136 yards and scored four touchdowns. Three of his scores came in the first quarter as the Knights led 18-0 after one period.
The Bishops led by halftime, after a Lavonte Hampton 79-yard punt return for touchdown, and a one-yard sneak.
