CHARLESTON, WV -

West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Walt Helmick has announced that Eric Ewing, now Plant Industries Division Assistant Director, has been appointed to the director's post.

Ewing, a Fayette County resident, moved into the top job Nov. 1.

Ewing started with the WVDA in 1995. He holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Concord University and a master's degree in biology from Marshall University.

He began his duties with the WVDA as a nursery inspector and then became supervisor of the Plant Pest Regulatory Programs Unit. He was promoted to assistant director in 2011.

Ewing replaces Sherrie Hutchinson, who retired from the WVDA at the end of October with 35 years of service.
