The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights made a long, overnight trip to Martinsburg well worth it on Saturday afternoon, with a 50-20 victory over Class AAA Spring Mills (1-9) earning the Maroon Knights a spot in the Class A playoffs for the 15th consecutive year.
The projections put Wheeling Central (6-4) at Williamstown (8-2) next Friday night in the opening round of the Class A playoffs, but the official pairings will be announced tomorrow afternoon.
Wheeling Central senior running back C.J. Burch, playing for the third straight week with a huge cast over a broken left hand, carried the ball 11 times for 220 yards and scored two touchdowns on runs of 54 and 39 yards. Senior Joe John added a pair of touchdown runs and sophomore quarterback Matt Gruber contributed a pair of five-yard touchdown passes. Starting quarterback, freshman Isaac Rine, who only played the first half, rushed for 57 yards and had a touchdown pass.
