MARTINS FERRY, Ohio -

A celebration was held in Belmont County Sunday for a special veteran.

Joe Ruskowski celebrated his 90th birthday with his family, friends, and fellow service members by his side. Ruskowski served in World War II as a Navy Seaman on the USS California Battleship. He is a Wheeling native, and was one of 17 children in his family. He was sent home early after two of his brothers died in battle.

Ruskowski didn't ever receive any of his earned medals, but his family had a special surprise for him at his birthday party. "We searched his records and were able to have replicas made of the medals that he wanted and never received," says Joe's Daughter-in-law, Janey Ruskowski.

Ruskowski was presented with three medals from the VFW. The American Campaign, Liberation of the Philippines and The Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal.
