One group wants gas drilling banned in the City of Wheeling, and on Tuesday, Nov. 12, its members presented their evidence to the Ohio County Board of Health.
The Wheeling Water Warriors and FACT OV have presented what they call strong evidence connecting the gas drilling industry to health problems effecting people who live near them. They were hoping it would be enough to convince the Ohio County Board of Health to take a stand against a proposed frack water treatment plant in Warwood.
However, the board is still not sure what it can do. Dr. Ben Stout from Wheeling Jesuit University, told the board that trucks carrying brine-water from the facilities are dangerous for residents and first responders. He also said local ordinances may be the only way to help keep the community safe. The board stressed there is no lack of interest on the topic, but coming up with a resolution will be difficult.
While some legislative bodies have banned types of drilling activity, no regulatory agency, such as the EPA, has stopped it.
