MARTINSBURG, WV -

Ronda Lehman is the new coordinator of the Jefferson County Teen Court. Her selection was made by the teen court's advisory board.

The peer-operated program, an initiative of the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, is an alternative to the traditional juvenile justice system that's aimed at empowering youth and communities to take an active role in addressing the early stages of youth delinquency.

In Teen Court, first-time youthful offenders are given immediate consequences, including restitution. It's available to those under the age of 18 who have committee a status offense that would be considered a misdemeanor if committed by an adult.

Among Lehman's duties: training, intake interviews, presentations to public schools, scheduling and maintaining cases for followup and communicating with state and county departments and the local court systems.

Lehman's background includes 25 years of experience in medicine, including decades as a legal nurse and nurse paralegal.

Active in the local Eastern Panhandle community, Lehman has served as a coach for youth soccer and softball. She has taught first aid to Weebelo and Boy Scouts and has served as president of the Washington High School Football Boosters. She is a member of the Blue Ridge Watershed Coalition and as member of the Jefferson County Census Committee.

Lehman succeeds the teen court's initial coordinator, Stacey Rohn.
