People in Powhatan are remembering Marvin Brown.
The flag at the American Legion is flying at half staff.
Belmont County 911 got the call first.
"The Powhatan Fire Department was dispatched," said Belmont County Sheriff Dave Lucas. "They found a deceased elderly male, 73 years of age."
Marvin Brown was well known in Powhatan.
"He had close ties to the community," said the sheriff. "He was the previous mayor of Powhatan."
He was mayor in 1984 and 1985.
They found him inside a hunting cabin on his property on Powhatan Hill, also called German Hill.
They say he'd been shot and was lying on the floor, dead.
At the Powhatan American Legion, they are remembering the man who was always helpful, and was once their post commander.
"He was well liked at the post," said Dave Tolzda of the American Legion. "Marvin, all in all, was a good person. It's a shame what happened to him. I hope they catch whoever did it."
And Sheriff Lucas is on board with that.
He brought in crime scene specialists from Ohio BCI & I, who spent hours at the scene, processing evidence.
They say it was definitely a homicide.
"We're in the investigative stage," said Sheriff Lucas. "So now we're waiting to get the medical and other information back so we can move on this aggressively."
And he's asking for the public's help.
Anyone with information about what happened in that remote hunting cabin is urged to call the Belmont County Sheriff's Department at (740) 695-7795 and ask for Detective Ryan Allar.
