Century Aluminum files definitive Ky. energy agreements for Sebree smelter

Posted: Updated:

Century Aluminum Sebree LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Century Aluminum Company, Energy Corp. and Big Rivers Electric Corporation announced Nov. 20 they have finalized and filed with the Kentucky Public Service Commission definitive agreements for a new power arrangement for the Sebree aluminum smelter in Henderson County, Ky.

The agreements are the first step in finalizing the power arrangement, which is subject to approvals from various third parties, including the PSC and the USDA Rural Utilities Service. The plant's current power contract expires Jan. 31, 2014.

Century's Ravenswood plant has been closed since 2009, with the company citing an unfavorable electricity rate as the reason, even after going through a special rate hearing with the West Virginia Public Service Commission in 2012.

The Sebree smelter has an annual production capacity of 205,000 tonnes of primary aluminum, and it employs about 480 people.

Kenergy Corp. is a nonprofit electric cooperative that serves 55,282 members in 14 counties in western Kentucky.
