The No.2 Martinsburg Bulldogs won an unprecedented fourth straight Class AAA state championship with a hard-fought 9-7 victory over No.1, and previously unbeaten Huntington, at Wheeling Island Stadium.
Martinsburg senior quarterback Malique Watkins connected with tight end Troy Walker for the lone Bulldogs touchdown, a five-yard connection, in the second quarter. It gave Martinsburg a 9-0 halftime lead, following a blocked punt for safety out of the end zone. Watkins was named game MVP, rushing for 63 yards and passing for 39.
Huntington's Paden Christian had a two-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs stiffened the rest of the way, winning a state-record fourth consecutive Class AAA state title. Martinsburg finishes the season at 13-1 under head coach Dave Walker.
