Rahall announces funds for Mingo County waterline project

Federal funds will be available for the construction of the Naugatuck to East Kermit waterline extension project and the Ben Creek water project, Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.a., announced Friday.

"Clean drinking water equals good health, plus we get the added benefit of laying a solid foundation for job creation and economic growth," Rahall said. "Having urged the EPA to provide some leeway in the use of these funds, I am please to announce that the funding has been made available and that work on these water projects can get underway."

Rahall said using his seniority and the bipartisan partnerships he has built he intends to keep pressing hard for the Federal resources that bring "modern and reliable infrastructure to communities."

The Mingo County Public Service District will receive a grant for over $720,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to complete waterline extensions for Naugatuck to East Kermit and continue work for Ben Creek. Rahall successfully sought an adjustment in use of previously appropriated funds which was recently approved by the EPA.

"We are grateful for Congressman Rahall's support and his ongoing efforts to get us good, clean drinking water," said Steve Kominar, Executive Director, Mingo County Redevelopment Authority. "Improvements like these help the economic growth and development of our communities."

The first project to be completed is the Naugatuck to East Kermit waterline extension, which will extend water service along County Route 52 to 31 customers between Naugatuck and East Kermit. Water will be provided by the Mingo County Public Service District from its Naugatuck treatment facility. Construction is expected to begin as soon as next month.

The Ben Creek water project, which requires additional funding to be completed, will serve approximately 4,260 existing customers, and 309 new customers on W.Va. 8/1 and 8/9.
