West Virginia became one of the 10 largest U.S. producers of natural gas for the first time in 2012, moving up from the 11th spot a year earlier, according to a report issued Dec. 17 by the Energy Information Administration.

Texas and Louisiana remained in the top two spots, but Pennsylvania moved up from seventh to third in the rankings, mainly because of production in the Marcellus Shale region.

Other regions rounding out the top 10, in order, were: Oklahoma, Wyoming, Colorado, federal offshore,  New Mexico and Arkansas.

The EIA said Pennsylvania could pass Louisiana on the list when final numbers from 2013 are available.

Production numbers included natural gas liquids.

West Virginia was a net producer of natural gas last year. It produced about 539.9 trillion cubic feet of gas while consuming about 129.6 Tcf. It also produced about 10.9 Tcf of natural gas liquids.
