Nearly 7,000 West Virginians who receive long-term federal unemployment benefits will be cut off at the end of the week.

West Virginians are among more than 1 million people nationwide who are set to be cut off of the benefits when the funding expires Saturday. Without an extension, another 1.9 million people would miss out on the benefits next year.

The benefits are available for anyone unemployed for at least 26 weeks. People who are unemployed for 25 weeks or less can receive state unemployment benefits.
