West Liberty Men Still No.1 as New Year Begins

Posted: Updated:

The unbeaten West Liberty University men's basketball team picked up yet another first-place vote over the holidays and enters the New Year as the overwhelming choice at No. 1 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' NCAA Division II Top 25 poll.

Coach Jim Crutchfield's No. 1-ranked Hilltoppers (8-0) now have 14 of the 16 first-place votes for 396 points in the poll, which includes games played from Dec. 16-29. NCAA Division II teams observed a 7-day break from Dec. 22-29 for the Christmas holiday.

Bellarmine, Ky. (8-0) held onto the No. 2 spot with the remaining two first-place votes and 385 points. Defending national champion Drury, Mo. (9-0), Florida Southern (12-0) and Metro State, Colo. (8-1) round out the top five.

Perennial Atlantic Region power Indiana, Pa. (10-0) holds down the No. 6 spot, followed by Dixie State, Utah (9-0), Southern Indiana (8-0), Tarleton State, Texas (10-0) and East Stroudsburg, Pa. (11-0), another Atlantic Region squad.

The Hilltoppers, who lead the nation in scoring at 116.2 ppg. and haven't trailed in the second half of any game this season, are the only Mountain East Conference squad in this week's Top 25. Fast-rising Shepherd (9-1) received 24 points in the voting but fell just short of the main list.
This is WLU's 24th No. 1 national ranking in the last four seasons and the 31st consecutive poll with the Hilltoppers in the Top 5.

West Liberty's streak of 57 consecutive weeks in the Top 25 is the longest active streak in the nation.

The Hilltoppers return to action at home on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Concord to the ASRC for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
