Explosion, Fire at Burger Plant in Shadyside Put Emergency Response Plan to the Test
The explosion and fire at the shuttered R.E. Burger Plant in Shadyside on Saturday night could have been far worse, even catastrophic, according to officials.
The huge fire at the closed power plant actually ended with
good news, and that wouldn't have been possible without the large
number of boots on the ground Saturday. Officials activated the Ohio Fire
Chief Response Plan, and ended up with hundreds of trained
firefighters from as far away as Lore City. Officials say without the quick response, the fire could have ended very differently and could have spread through the wiring ducts and throughout the building, and
could have put firefighters in danger.
This week, professional clean-up contractors are on site, as well as the EPA. The cause of the explosion remains unknown.
