As Burglaries Rise in the Wheeling Area, Police Ask Residents to Take Precautions

Posted: Updated:
WHEELING -

Burglaries are on the rise in Wheeling neighborhoods with three more incidents reported over the weekend and Wheeling Police are asking residents to be vigilant.

Know how to protect yourself from falling victim.

Detectives have seen it happen countless times, simple mistakes that can land you in a world of trouble. They advise: think twice before telling your friends about that new TV you got on Facebook. Posting about valuables, or upcoming vacations can be an advertisement to thieves.

Several of the crimes are happening because a home isn't properly secured, whether the doors are left unlocked for a short period of time, or a garage door left open. Thieves will take any opportunity they can get.

Police are asking residents to watch out for your neighbors, if you see someone near a home in your neighborhood, don't just assume they belong there, if you think it's suspicious, call police, and they will investigate.
