Sick and Injured Belmont County Horses Taken From Owners Now Recovering

SOMERTON, OHIO -

Ten horses found sick and injured are now recovering and in the custody of the Belmont County Animal Rescue League after being seized from their owners in Somerton.

Officials say the horses were thin, filled with worms, covered with open sores, suffering from a skin ailment known as "rain rot," and with badly outgrown hooves. The five adult and five "baby" horses were removed from two brothers in Somerton, who agreed to give up custody.

Humane Officer Mandae Lewis said they also removed two dogs from the farm-one with a smashed infected paw and one with a broken leg and torn ACL ligament.

Lewis says the horses and both dogs are getting vet treatment and are recovering.

They will all be available for adoption.

Anyone interested in helping or adopting can call the Belmont County Animal Shelter at (740) 695-4708.
