The Multimodal Transportation and Infrastructure Consortium, or MTIC, has selected Austin Connor as the Transportation Research Board Outstanding Student of the Year 2014.

The MTIC is a Tier 1 University Transportation Center. It includes the Rahall Transportation Institute at Marshall University, the Kentucky Transportation Center at the University of Kentucky, the Center for Transportation Innovation and Logistics and Distribution Institute at the University of Louisville and the Eastern Seaboard Intermodal Transportation Application Center at Hampton University.

For the past 20 years, the U.S. Department of Transportation has honored an outstanding student from each University Transportation Center. Connor was honored at the Council of University Transportation Center annual banquet Jan. 11 in Washington, D.C.

"(Connor) is wiling to take on difficult tasks, even those that were beyond his current capabilities and is an active learner," said Young Hoon Kim, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Louisville.

Connor received a bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky. He currently is a master's of engineering graduate student and is expected to graduate in the spring of 2014. He is a graduate research and teaching assistant in the civil and environmental engineering department.

He currently is conducting research to investigate the shear properties of reinforcement in concrete systems. His focus area is to develop the design methodology using innovative construction materials for sustainable development of transportation infrastructure systems.

MTIC was awarded Tier I University Transportation Center status by the United States Department of Transportation. It is one of 10 such institutions, and its goal is to solve existing transportation challenges as well as to further develop the capacity to address future needs through applied intermodal research and advanced technology.
