CHARLESTON, WV -

Lt. Spencer Hill, a decorated veteran of the West Virginia Division of Corrections, has earned the national designation of Certified Correctional Trainer through the Correctional Trainer Certification Commission.

The certification program is a partnership between the American Jail Association and the International Association of Correctional Training Personnel.

Hill is one of only 22 corrections professionals nationwide to have achieved this designation. The 40-year-old Fayette County native is a senior corrections program specialist who provides training in such areas as defensive tactics, firearms and non-lethal weapons.

Hill earned certification through his successful completion of a rigid experiential background application and an intensive three-hour examination prepared by the CTCC and AJA.

Certification in correctional training is a demonstration of competency and professionalism in the field. The correctional trainer's certification documents the mastery of a strong level of knowledge in the specialty and demonstrates continuing education and growth.

Hill began his correctional career in 1994 at the Denmar Correctional Center in Pocahontas County.

At Denmar he held the positions of correctional officer, corporal, sergeant and lieutenant. He also led Denmar's Correctional Emergency Response Team.

He joined the corrections academy at the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety's Professional Development Center in 2007, and serves as Northern District lead trainer.

Hill has been awarded the Corrections Meritorious Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, two Corrections Commendation Medals, the Unit Citation Medal and five Good Conduct Medals along with numerous certificates and letters of commendation.

Hill is pursuing a master's degree in strategic leadership at the University of Charleston. He holds a Regents Bachelor of Arts and an associate degree from West Virginia University at Parkersburg.
