The NCAA announced that Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU) has the highest graduation rates in the Mountain East Conference, according to the recent Academic Success Rate (ASR) data.

Wheeling Jesuit had an ASR of 83 percent, 16 percent higher than the MEC conference average and 29 percent higher than the NCAA Division II national average.

"This institution is all about nurturing student-athletes mind, body and spirit. Being number one in the academic success rate for the Mountain East Conference is a strong evidence that our students take academics seriously," said Frank Bauer, executive director of intercollegiate and varsity athletic operations.

"I am proud to say that our student-athletes have the highest graduation rate in our new conference. These students work hard every day, and seeing our graduation rate in the 80th percentile means our students can balance the rigors of academic programs and demanding athletic schedules and come out on top," said WJU President Rev. James Fleming, S.J.

In women's sports, volleyball, golf and swimming saw an ASR of 100 percent during the 2003-06 academic years.

"Our coaches and professors are here to make a difference in the lives of these students, and it will continue to be our mission at the university to challenge students to perform their best on the fields and in the classrooms.  We want to see them get their diplomas from Fr. Fleming on graduation day," said Bauer.

Wheeling Jesuit University is currently home to 20 men and women's NCAA Division II sports, two club sports (Ice Hockey & Cheerleading) and a men's USA Rugby Division I team. Not all current sports were compiled and used as data in the 2003-06 Academic Success Rate.
