Cat Found Frozen to Ohio County Bridge Given a Fighting Chance

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. -

Ohio County Humane officer Doug McCroskey made a shocking discovery Tuesday afternoon when he found a cat literally frozen to the bridge just steps from the Ohio County Animal Shelter. Now, that cat has a fighting chance at life.

The cat was found with her back legs and tail encased in ice. McCroskey thinks she was there overnight Monday into Tuesday. She was covered in cinders from passing cars when she was discovered.

The vet treated her for hypothermia and frostbite in her back legs, tail and ears. McCroskey says it's now a waiting game.

"We're hopeful," he said. "This morning I came in and got her out and she moved around a little bit. She wasn't even doing that yesterday. So we're hopeful, but she's not out of the woods yet."

McCroskey explained they're waiting to see how her skin and muscles heal after being frozen solid. Unfortunately he says it's not out of the realm of possibility that someone dumped her near the shelter in the freezing cold on Monday night.

If she continues to heal, it's possible that she'll be up for adoption in a week or so.
