A 29-year-old Putnam County man was sentenced Monday, Feb. 3, to three years and 10 months in federal prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Joseph R. Elswick, Hurricane, was taken into custody in December 2012 after police received reports of a man using drugs in a parked car. When officers approached, Elswick fled.

Goodwin said when officers arrested Elswick, he had a loaded .32 caliber pistol in his possession. He was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a 2009 felony drug conviction. Goodwin said his right to possess a firearm had not been restored.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and Hurricane police. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Sharon M. Frazier handled the prosecution.
