West Virginia American Water announced Feb. 4 that in addition to providing residential customers with a 1,000 gallon credit in the wake of the Jan. 9 Freedom Industries chemical leak, it also would provide a credit to small business customers.

The credit was to allow customers to flush their water systems, and the company also announced it is working with the Public Service Commission of West Virginia for both residential and commercial credits.

"To aid small business customers in this difficult time, we will offer a financial credit equivalent to 2,000 gallons calculated on the second tier block of our tariff rates," West Virginia American Water President Jeff McIntyre said in a statement. "We will be providing this credit, which amounts to $20.58 per bill, to some 5,280 commercial customers.

"This credit not only recognizes the size of these commercial establishments but also their need for additional cleansing requirements."

The company said the 1,000 gallon residential credit equates to about 10 days of normal water usage for the average residential customer and the flushing guidelines it provided instructed customers to flush for a total of 25 minutes, which would use a maximum of 500 gallons.
