Water Levels Rise in Tygart Valley River, County Residents Concerned About Ice Flows

Posted: Updated:

Water levels are high along the Tygart Valley River in Randolph County.

Residents have seen the ice build up on the river banks in the past few weeks with the recent polar temperatures that have affected the east. Some residents have said that the water has been flowing into their yards and staying there.

The Randolph County Office of Emergency Management said it is not uncommon for people to see this happening.

Ice build-up forms along rivers and banks and stays there for a period of time.  It eventually disappears.

"Because of that it will sometimes slow the flow, it will restrict it to a point, but it won't stop the flow.  We don't have any ice jams, but we do have some ice build-up," said Emergency Management Director, Jim Wise.

Wise said it won't be a problem as long as it runs its course and rivers continuing flowing.  Randolph County is under a flood from 8 p.m. tonight until Wednesday morning.
