USA Today has published a list of the top cities in the country they say have a soaring crime rate, and the Wheeling metropolitan area sits at number three on that list.
According to data released by the FBI, the Wheeling metropolitan area had a 67 percent increase in violent crime in the past five years. However, the article also cites that even though the crime rate has risen, the region is relatively safe compared to national averages.
Ohio, Belmont and Marshall Counties, which are part of Wheeling's "metro area," are both considered part of the "Appalachian high intensity drug trafficking area," according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
