Bridgemont Community and Technical College to host ‘introduce a girl to engineering'

Posted: Updated:

Bridgemont Community and Technical College will host the sixth annual "WV Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Columbia Gas Auditorium in Charleston.

The event aims to increase awareness of the profession as well as to celebrate the past and present engineering achievements of women. The event also strives to let young women know engineering can be a possible career and to provide them with knowledge to start laying the foundation for that goal.

According to Bridgemont, research shows girls are less apt to consider engineering as a career field, so the goal of the event is to change young girls' perceptions of engineering and to let them know West Virginia has a need for young, female engineers.

The event at Bridgemont is part of a nationwide movement, known as "Girl Day," which caters to 8th grade, female students. Local female professionals who work in the engineering and science fields will collaborate with the students and take part in a variety of demonstrations and experiments to provide the students with hands-on experience in the different disciplines of engineering and engineering technology.

"This is a great opportunity for girls to learn what great things they can accomplish," said Bridgemont Community and Technical College President Beverly Jo Harris. "By exposing these students to the exciting field of engineering technology, these young women may become the next generation of engineers and scientists to move West Virginia forward in a global economy.

The event is sponsored by Columbia Pipeline Group, Dupont, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, UTC Aerospace Systems, Terradon, American Home Inspectors and Engineers, DOW, Eagle Research Corporation, HDR Engineering, WV Society of Professional Engineers, WVU Institute of Technology, American Society of Civil Engineers — Young Member Forum, CAS Structural Engineers Inc. and Bridgemont Community and Technical College.

Schools in Boone, Cabell, Greenbrier, Jackson, Kanawha, Logan and Wood counties will participate in the event. Contact Amanda McClellan at 304-734-6672 for details.
