Stonewall Jackson middle schoolers to present mock trial at Supreme Court

Posted: Updated:

Students from Stonewall Jackson Middle School will present a mock trial before 13th Judicial Circuit Judge Louis H. "Duke" Bloom at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in his courtroom at the Kanawha County Judicial Annex in Charleston.

The presentation is part of the Supreme Court's "West Virginia Law Adventure" program.

Unlike other mock trial programs in which students perform cases using scripts prepared by adults, in "West Virginia Law Adventure," each class writes its own script based on one of three criminal case scenarios in the program's rules book. Students must then perform their trials at a courthouse in front of a judicial officer before mailing their written transcripts to the West Virginia State Bar.

The Bar's Young Lawyers Section chooses winners, who are then invited to perform their mock trials at the Supreme Court.

The trips to the Supreme Court and the local courthouse are paid for by a grant from the West Virginia Bar Foundation.
