A training session for the Belmont County Special Operations Branch ended up with a real-life medical emergency.
One of the officers, who is a Bellaire police officer, got a bullet through the leg as law enforcement agencies were holding the maneuvers at St. Clairsville's outdoor shooting range.
Bellaire Police Chief Mike Kovalyk said the officer whose gun went off and was injured is "a good solid officer, pro-active in safety, dedicated and well-trained."
Kovalyk said that the Belmont County Sheriff's Department is testing his equipment to see if it was a mechanical problem that caused the gun to fire.
The bullet went through his calf, and didn't hit any bones or tendons, and officers said it was fortunate that a trained EMT was on the scene.
