A man accused of DUI causing death after a November, 2012 crash near The Highlands that killed one woman and critically injured another, has pleaded guilty to the charge.
29-year-old John Hatfield of Fayetteville, Arkansas, entered the plea on Friday before Judge David Sims in Ohio County Circuit Court. Officials said Hatfield admitted at the scene that he had been drinking at Jill's Gentleman's Club before he later ran into a car on McCutcheon Road near the Highlands. The prosecution said Hatfield claimed he had 5 beers, then changed his story and said he had nine. Prosecutors said evidence showed that he was driving more than twice the speed limit and had nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.
The passenger in the car that was struck, Stephanie Stahl, lived for several hours on a ventilator, but died later that day. The driver, Nicole Gray, was in critical condition, but recovered.
Hatfield could be sentenced to 2 to 10 years in prison, with credit for time he served in
home confinement. A sentencing date has not been set.
