Steel of West Virginia increased production in 2013

Steel of West Virginia saw its product shipments increase by 2.7 percent last year and by 4 percent over 2011, according to its parent company's annual report.

The Huntington-based steel mill shipped 309,868 tons of product in 2013, up from 301,730 in 2012 and 297,902 in 2011.

Steel of West Virginia is an operating company of Steel Dynamics, which is based in Fort Wayne, Ind. Steel of West Virginia primarily sells merchant beams, channels and specialty structural steel sections.

The Huntington mill produces and fabricates specialty steel sections and custom-finished products, that are placed directly into customers' assembly lines. Many of its are produced in small quantities for low-volume end uses. Customers are primarily manufacturers producing truck trailers, industrial lift trucks, merchant products, guardrail posts, manufactured housing, mining, and off-highway construction equipment. The largest customers are in the truck trailer and industrial lift truck industries.

During 2013 and 2012, Steel of West Virginia exported 10 percent and 9 percent, respectively, of its sales.
