The Martins Ferry boys took advantage of a third meeting with Union Local, knocking off the Jets 52-49, in the Division III District Semifinals in front of an overflow crowd at Ohio University Eastern.
The Jets swept the season-series from the Purple Riders, and led in this game after one quarter, at halftime, and after three quarters. But Martins Ferry outscored UL 17-11 in the fourth quarter.
Martins Ferry's Robert Vargo, the Division III Eastern District Player of the Year, scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. 6-8 sophomore Emilio Appolloni added 13 points, and classmate James Edwards contributed 11 points, including a pair of huge free throws with :16 left in the fourth quarter.
The Jets, who finished the season at 22-2, were led by sophomore Trenton Tipton with 15 points. Classmates David Paulick and Kaleb McDiffitt added nine points, and junior Gavin Porter added eight.
The Purple Riders 14-9) are back in the District Finals for the second straight year. They'll take on Garaway, a 48-44 winner over Fort Frye in the other semi, in the district final on Friday night at 7 at OUE.
