WLU Women Jump Up to No. 7 in Region

Posted: Updated:

The West Liberty University women's basketball team made a big move in the Atlantic Region rankings this week, jumping up three spots to No. 7 when the NCAA Division II Ranking Committee released its final weekly set of regional rankings late Wednesday afternoon.

The regional rankings are used to select the eight teams that will participate in next month's Atlantic Region Tournament.  The PSAC and CIAA Tournament champions each receive automatic bids with at-large bids for the top six remaining teams filling out the field.
The final set of regional rankings will be compiled on Sunday after the conclusion of the PSAC and MEC Tournaments. The regional tournament pairings will be revealed at 10 p.m. Sunday on a live webcast at www.NCAA.com.
The top five spots remain unchanged from a week ago with Gannon still No. 1 followed by MEC regular-season champion Glenville State, Edinboro, Bloomsburg and Virginia State.
Perennial Atlantic Region power Shaw moved up from No. 8 to No. 6 after knocking off regionally-ranked Virginia State and Fayetteville State to win the CIAA Tournament.
Coach Lynn Ullom's Hilltoppers jumped all the way from No. 10 to No. 7 this week after finishing off a late-season surge with a 71-66 win against Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday. One of the region's hottest teams coming down the stretch, West Liberty won 11 of its last 12 regular-season games to finish second in the MEC and earn the No. 2 seed in this week's MEC Tournament.
Fairmont State slipped from No. 7 to No. 8 this week following an upset loss at unranked Notre Dame (OH) while Fayetteville State remained locked in at No. 9 after falling to Shaw in the CIAA semifinals. Charleston, riding a 5-game winning streak into MEC Tournament play, moves into post-season contention at No. 10.
The Hilltoppers will be gunning for their 20th win on Thursday when they make their MEC Tournament debut against UVA-Wise in a noon quarterfinal.
