Brooke County officials announced a huge project on Monday that will be taking place at the former Brooke Glass site in Wellsburg.
The Business Development Corporation of the Northern Panhandle announced that they will be using a newly funded regional grant program to help redevelop the old Brooke Glass property in Wellsburg, as well as other industrial sites in the area. The new regional "Site-Ready Program" addresses Brownfields sites using nearly $380,000 in funding from the Benedum Foundation over a three-year period.
It's a property that has sat dormant for more than three decades, and in its former years, was a booming factory where Commission President Tim Ennis said he had many relatives who were employees there.
Ennis said the site needs to be secured, organizations need to keep the public informed, and officials must apply for phase 2 environmental assessments to keep the historical significance of the Brooke Glass site as they move forward.
