Several local law firms have joined forces with residents in Ohio and Marshall counties to make sure they get their fair share when they seal a deal on their land with gas and oil companies.
The firms say they have already gotten a great response and are representing thousands of acres, but the more people that pull together, the more negotiating leverage they'll have.
It's called the "Marshall and Ohio County Land Group." Law firms in Marshall County joined forces about a month ago and are in the initial stages of negotiating land terms on how much to lease mineral rights for with a new oil and gas company, called "Fossil Creek." The firms are asking others to join and they say the power is in numbers.
"We're inviting the community to join with our land group," said Jonathan Turak, an attorney with Gold Khourey and Turak. "Obviously the larger the group the more leverage we have in these negotiations. Our goal is to put together the very largest land group that has ever been put together in Marshall and Ohio Counties.
"I think we have the possibility of doing that and if we do it will give us tremendous leverage against the oil and gas company and we really expect positive results."
A public meeting is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. April 9 at the Grand Vue Park Banquet Hall in Moundsville. The attorneys will host a question and answer session at the meeting.
