Logan, WV -

Benita F. Murphy of Logan County has been appointed chairwoman of the West Virginia Parole Board.

A member of the board since mid-2000, Murphy has served as acting chairwoman and as chairwoman for three years starting in 2004.

She worked as a legal secretary for more than 35 years. She earned a bachelor's degree in technical management from Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio, and a master's degree in criminal justice from Mountain State University.

Murphy succeeds Dennis Foreman, who had headed the board since early 2007.

The governor appoints each of the nine parole board members to six-year terms, and also appoints one of the members to serve as chair.
