The Wheeling Jesuit Women's Lacrosse team took a tense 16-15 come-from-behind victory over the Findlay Oilers Friday afternoon on WJU's new Bishop Schmitt Field in a game that saw seven lead changes.
The conference win puts them in first place in the GLIAC standings at 3-2, while moving to 7-4 overall on the season.
Sophomore attacker Jessie Tuffnell (Flower Mound, Tex.) scored the go-ahead goal to seal the victory for the Cardinals with four minutes to play, just one of her game high six goals on the night.
After a back and forth first half, the Cardinals trailed by as many as three goals in the second half before Elizabeth Hales and Tuffnell combined for five of the last six goals of the game to give WJU the win.
Those final six goals, paired with three key late-game saves from goalkeeper Maire Austin (who had nine saves total on the night) gave WJU the edge heading into the final minutes.
Hales was the team's second leading scorer, putting in four goals on the night. Olivia Krock added a pair of goals for the Cardinals as well, and Sara Fitzsimon, Paige Plesich, Mary Burns and Shelby McClure each scored singles. All told seven different Cardinals found the back of the net.
The Cardinals return to action again on Sunday when they place host to GLIAC foe Walsh University at 2:00 p.m.. Wheeling Jesuit will be hosting a tailgate party sponsored by Main Street Bank surrounding the event.
