Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia was one of two companies in the Mountain State and one of 18 Pennsylvania companies to be recognized by the American Heart Association as a platinum level Fit-Friendly Worksite.

According to Highmark, employees are encouraged to participate in a variety of wellness programs as well as take advantage of an on-site wellness center and health clinic. Highmark also provides incentives for its employees to engage in healthier living and to receive preventive care. Highmark has been able to achieve measurable outcomes for its employees that include decreased health care expenses and improved workforce productivity, according to the company.

The AHA's standards for a platinum-level Fit-Friendly Worksite include offering employees physical activity options in the workplace, increasing healthy eating options at the worksite, promoting a wellness culture in the workplace and implementing at least nine criteria outlined by the AHA in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture.
