One man was arrested on Monday as a suspect in a string of weekend burglaries spanning Jefferson and Harrison Counties.
Michael Hawthorne, 31, of Parlett, was arrested after a Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy found him at the front door to a Family Dollar Store.
The burglaries began when Hawthorne allegedly stole a Steubenville City Water Department van on University Boulevard and smashed into the front door of Woods Grocery in Hopedale. According to Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla, seven handguns were also stolen from the Sportsman's Trading Post in Wintersville and now, they could be on the streets.
"That's the bad thing about the guns being stolen. They're not being sold to good people they're being sold to the bad guys; the thieves the dope dealers the dope heads and what have you," the sheriff said. So there's seven guns stolen. so there's going to be seven guns on the streets of Steubenville."
Hawthorne could also possibly be connected to an attempted armed robbery on Sunday morning at McDonalds, where a gun was stuffed through the drive-thru window.
In all, six burglaries were reported over the weekend, three of them just 25 minutes apart in Wintersville.
