Sinkhole Discovered on Street in Bridgeport

Posted: Updated:
Just one day after dealing with a major waterline break, Bridgeport officials on Tuesday had another problem to fix - a sinkhole.

The sinkhole, discovered early Tuesday morning on Coal Street, measured 7 feet deep. Village officials believe the sinkhole, which is only a block away from Monday's water break, gave way overnight. Council member Jim Porter said the empty space beneath the hole is much larger than on the surface, and it's fortunate that no one walked or drove into it. He said it could swallow half a car.

On Monday, village officials had their hands full after a water main erupted around 3 a.m. on Main Street in the area of the Bridgeport Friendship Council food pantry. When Bridgeport police arrived on the scene, they reported the break was lifting the road up in spots. The leak left the entire village of Bridgeport without water for the majority of the day. Water was finally restored by 6:30 p.m.
