The Morgantown Monongalia Metropolitan Planning Organization (MMMPO) held a meeting on Wednesday night to discuss the future of the Mileground Road.
The board rescinded its recommendation that the Division of Highways construct a four-lane road with a median running down the middle, after hearing concerns from various business owners, who are located along the stretch of Route 705 to Easton Hill.
After a lengthy discussion, board members passed another recommendation.
"They requested that the Division of Highways construct a five-lane facility, but one that did not allow for traffic to move down the entire length of the highway, as if the fifth-lane was a thru-lane. So, what they wanted was, maybe a periodic median or turning specific locations, that would provide access across the widened road," said Bill Austin of the MMMPO.
The board also affirmed that it wants the project to happen quickly. Prior to the meeting, the project had been slated to begin in 2015.
The board will pass its recommendation along to the Division of Highways' Department of Transportation.
