    The Highmark Foundation recently awarded $74,000 in the form of 16 grants to schools in West Virginia through its “Creating a Healthy School Environment” program that aim at helping schools create innovative, healthy programs during the academic year.

    Energy Corporation of America, or ECA, Senior Vice President and General Counsel Don Supcoe started working for the company in 1981. ECA was founded in 1963 in Glenville, where it has since grown into a company that stretches throughout the country.

Beginning at 10 a.m. April 26, more than 400 West Virginia State University students, staff, faculty and alumni will gather at more than 30 work sites throughout the Kanawha and Putnam county area.

During the annual Cares Day, a day of community service, volunteers will work on a variety and types of projects, including painting, clean-up and organizing.

Work site locations include:
  • The Governor’s Mansion, 1716 Kanawha Blvd., East, Charleston. Volunteers will plant flowers, including annuals, perennials and edibles such as lettuce in support of the Governor’s community gardening project; 
  • The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, 1248 Greenbrier St., Charleston. Volunteers will wash and walk dogs and clean cages; 
  • Coonskin Park in Charleston, where volunteers will spread mulch and clean playgrounds and locker rooms; 
  • Metropolitan Community Development, 205 Donnally St., Charleston. Volunteers will assist with a science fair and community basketball tournament.
