Those wishing to go back in time merely have to hop aboard the Graceland Inn at Davis and Elkins College.

On April 30, 1930s and 1940s authentic music and menu selection all will be part of Dining by Rail theme night from 6-9 p.m.

“We’re so happy to be able to offer an authentic dining experience based upon the rich history of railroading,” said Carol Carter, chair of the Department of Business and Entrepreneurship.

The menu features Illinois Central Salad Wedge, Cream Virginia Sweet Potato Soup, and a choice of B&O Maryland Crab Cake, Deviled Slice of Roast Beef with Mustard Sauce or Scallopines of Pork Loin with Riesling Wine Sauce, served with Potatoes Romanoff and Fresh String Beans Sauté. The meal comes with Brown Betty with Fruit Sauce for dessert with tea, soda and coffee included.

The cuisine for the evening comes from “Dining by Rail,” a book by Davis & Elkins College Center for Railway Tourism Director Jim Porterfield. Collected from 48 railroads across the country, the 300 plus recipes presents the history of dining in the “Golden Age” of American railroading.

Participants will not only enjoy authentic food, but authentic commentary, with Porterfield strolling from table to table telling guests bits of railroad dining history. Door prizes will also be available, including copies of Porterfield’s book and dinner for two at Graceland. To complete the authentic experience, guests are encouraged to dress in 1930s and 1940s fashion. A prize will be awarded for the most authentically period-dressed couple.
