The Census of Governments: Finance - Survey of Public Pensions, conducted quinquennially (years ending in "2" and "7"), is the only source of data on all state and local pension systems. The total cash and investment holdings of the nation's state- and locally-administered defined benefit pensions systems totaled $3.1 trillion in 2012.
