Generous Young Girl Asks for Donations for Local Animal Shelter Instead of Birthday Presents

Posted: Updated:
A young Marshall County girl celebrated her eleventh birthday in an especially generous way.

She asked her friends not to give her any presents, but to make a donation instead to the shelter instead.

Most 11-year-olds ask for presents on their birthday, but Laney wanted to do something a little more special. She wanted to help cats and dogs.

"Normally they're all alone, and they don't have that much to do, so they brought food and toys and a lot of cool stuff for the animals," birthday girl Laney Twigg said.

Laney is celebrating her eleventh birthday with an owl themed party at the Marshall County Animal Shelter. But instead of giving gifts for her, she asked her friends to bring gifts for the cats and dogs.

Laney's friends donated to the cause, but they also came to celebrate. In order to commemorate the day and their donations, Laney gave her friends charm necklaces as party favors.

"We all got matching necklaces. It was really fun, and she had an owl theme, a cat, a dog, and her cat played with us all day, and it was really fun," Laney's friend Natalie Kiem said.

Laney chose charms for the necklaces that symbolize her special day.

"So, the owl is the theme of my party. The paw print is for the animals whenever we came here this morning, and the flower's because it's just May and a bunch of flowers are coming," Laney said.

The Marshall County Animal Shelter found homes for more than 1000 cats and dogs last year, including Laney's own pet cat, Evelyn.
