Billy Higgins Named ECHL Equipment Manager of the Year
The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are excited to announce that Billy Higgins has been named Reebok ECHL Equipment Manager of the Year.
Higgins, 32, was born in Wheeling, WV on August 20, 1981, and has been a mainstay in the Ohio Valley ever since. Billy attended Wheeling Park High School, where he graduated from in 1999. The following fall, he joined the Nailers as an Assistant Equipment Manager, which was a role that he held from 2000-03.
At the start of the 2003-04 season, Higgins took over as the team's Equipment Manager, and has maintained that role for 11 consecutive seasons. During that time, Billy has failed to miss a game, currently owning a streak of 792 consecutive regular season games and 49 postseason contests, giving him an overall run of 841 straight games. In 2006-07, he was voted on by his peers to serve as an Equipment Manager at the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game in Boise, ID. Higgins has also served as the club's emergency back-up goaltender for the Nailers in over 100 games.
In honor of his achievement, Higgins will receive a pair of custom Reebok ZigTech shoes.
Billy Higgins becomes the fifth non-player in Wheeling history to receive an ECHL award, joining Larry Kish (Executive of the Year, 1992-93), Pat Bingham (Coach of the Year, 2003-04), Kelly Clutter (Ticket Executive of the Year, 2005-06), and Brendan Burke (Broadcaster of the Year, 2007-08).
