OVMC Helping Employers Spot Drug Abuse in the Workplace

Posted: Updated:
WHEELING - It's a national problem growing across the nation and right here in our community.

There have been multiple robberies, car accidents and life-threatening fights all linked to drug abuse right here in the Ohio Valley, and what many do not realize is how much this affects the workplace. Now, one local hospital is offering help to employers to try and combat the growing problem.

OVMC is holding a class called "reasonable suspicion for supervisors," a three-hour presentation that will be offered not only to help employers identify a drug problem in the workplace, but also how to handle it. Substance abuse in the workplace affects everyone - in safety and your wallet. It costs more than 6$00 billion a year to pay for crime, lost work, productivity, and healthcare according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse. National studies estimate the cost of substance abuse from employees ranges from $7,000 to $25,000 annually per substance user. Nearly three-fourths of drug users are employed and active in the workplace.

The class is limited to 125 participants. It will be held on Friday, May 30, from noon until 3.
