Tempers Flare as Beallsville High School Closure Rumors Abound

HANNIBAL, Ohio - Switzerland of Ohio Board of Education meetings have rarely seen passion of this magnitude.

Groups of residents, fueled by Beallsville High School closure rumors, packed the regular Board of Education meeting held at River High School on Thursday evening. About 75 people, many wearing Beallsville Blue Devils colors,  came to voice their view that Beallsville High School should remain open.

A Beallsville High School alumna, Nikki Trigg, told board members, "The headlines read, 'Monroe County gas production soaring', and 'Drilling outlook appears bright.'  Let's give all the schools a chance and keep them all open.  It seems the problem is the administration.  Maybe the answer is to close the central office and start afresh."  Audience members gave her remarks a standing ovation.

Board members listened as people during the public forum time talked about promises they say were broken after voters approved school levies for the district.  Still other speakers accused the board of favoring Monroe Central High School at the expense of Beallsville High.

Switzerland of Ohio Superintendent John Hall told WTRF the district was in "survey mode, gathering more information."  Hall went on to say no redistricting action has come concerning schools in the district.
