Holubeck Set To Race For National Championship

Posted: Updated:
Wheeling Jesuit senior distance runner Luke Holubeck (St. Clairsville, Ohio) will cap off his stellar career for the Cardinals on the country’s biggest stage on Thursday, at the NCAA DII National Championship meet. Holubeck qualified for the National Championship in the 10,000M run with a time of 29:55.07, good enough to seed him in 8th place out of the 20 qualified runners. If Holubeck can maintain or improve on his 8th place rank, he will also qualify for All-American honors.

Holubeck’s sub 30-minute qualifying time is also a school record, eclipsing WJU head coach Ricky Moore’s previous record of 30:13.89 set in 2004.

Since missing out on nationals in 2013, Holubeck has been hard to beat in both Cross Country and on the track this year, winning the Mountain East Conference Cross Country championship but just missing out on national qualifying marks. In the Track & Field season, Holubeck also won the MEC 10k championship while simultaneously leading the Cardinals to a 1-2-3 sweep of the podium in that event.

“This has been a goal of mine since I was a freshman, just to make it to nationals,” said Holubeck. “Cross Country didn’t go well, so I was even more determined this season, and I worked my butt off. To finally make it this season, there is no better feeling.”

The men’s 10k national championship run will be held the first day of the championship meet on Thursday. The 10k race is the second to last event of the day, with the starting gun set to go off at 8:10 p.m. . Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan plays host to the championship event at the GVSU Track & Field Stadium.
