Torch Relay, Veterans Ceremony Among Events That Kicked Off Ogden Race Weekend in Wheeling

WHEELING - The annual Ogden Classic Half Marathon weekend has kicked off Friday with a number of events.

The Torch Relay took off at the Osiris Shrine Temple with Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger, who passed it off to a number of community members like Wheeling Mayor Andy McKenzie and WTRF's Brenda Danehart and Rachael Dierkes. Every year, this is held as the pre-celebration to the Ogden Classic.

A celebration was held at the end of the torch relay, dedicated to the Veterans who fought for our country. Dozens of people gathered at Heritage Port Friday for the ceremony, which included special recognition for World War II and Korean War Veterans.

A special concert was also held with a brass band from the Pittsburgh-area.

Even the kids got to take part in some of the Ogden festivities. The Tiny Tot Trot was also held Friday evening. There were two races, one for kids three and under, and one for four and five-year-olds.

The Tiny Tot Trot was sponsored by Ohio Valley Parent Magazine, and everyone received a ribbon and race number for participating. About 100 kids participated.

All of the events are leading up to the 38th annual Ogden Classic Half Marathon. On Saturday morning, thousands of runners will gather at the start-finish line to take on the half marathon or 5K race.

Half marathon walkers will take off at 7:30 a.m., while the runners will step up to the start line at 8:00 a.m. Both groups will trek 13.1 miles through Wheeling neighborhoods.

The 5K runners and walkers will start their 3.1 miles at 8:15 a.m.
