Ohio River Sweep Set for June 21st

Posted: Updated:
It's become an annual tradition here in the Ohio Valley and elsewhere across the nation, as we get ready for another Ohio River Sweep.

The River Sweep is set June 21st. The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission and West Virginia Make it Shine are trying to get the word out.

It's all part of a six-state event that extends the length of the river from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cairo, Illinois.

Lisa Cochran of ORSANCO says the river helps us with commerce, transportation and leisure and this is our chance to give back.

"The Ohio River is in our backyard so to speak but its an amazing resource and we need to protect it and this is one way to protect the Ohio River,"  said Cochran. "And its one way to get in touch with the Ohio River to see how beautiful and important this resource is."

Cochran says that when they started the river sweep 25 years ago she heard stories of how they had to remove appliances and cars from the river but now its mostly debris being washed into the river and on the banks by storms.

The easiest way to find a River Sweep location simply go to OhioRiverSweep.org or call the Jefferson County JB Green Team at 740-266-6899.
