Large Number of Children, and Their Parents, Turn Out Wheeling Island Summer Lunch Program

Posted: Updated:
WHEELING - St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Wheeling Island has a summer tradition of feeding hungry children, and on Monday, even with no prior publicity, they had a large number of children, and their parents, show up for lunch.

The St. Luke's Summer Lunch program has become an ingrained part of people's lives, and on Monday the church opened its doors to the community. Director Judy Rebich was pleased to see a long line of both kids and their parents.

Rebich started this program 15 years ago when she saw that when school was out for summer, it left a void in children's lives in terms of nutrition.

She said some of the teenagers who come to the summer lunch program started when they were babies.

The program is not a government subsidized program. It is strictly from St. Luke's and many generous donors. For instance, Jebbia's Market provides all the fruit for the program, all summer long.

It is held Monday through Friday, noon to 1 p.m., at St. Luke's, on South Penn Street, on Wheeling Island.
